Melanie Henderson (Kathy from The Short Circus) wrote about watching the studio taping of this segment on Dave Chad's late lamented Electric Company website: "The Electric Company and Sesame Street shared a studio on 81st Street and Broadway in New York City, so we taped for a few months then they taped for a few months, and so on. So on our off times, we'd occasionally go over and watch Sesame taping, if there was something interesting. One day, Lena Horne was taping a song with the little blue furry Grover Muppet and I went over to watch. Now, I could see the folks operating this puppet and I could see the technical maneuvering Lena had to do to interact with Grover and put her arm around him-- I think she was even sitting up on top of a ladder or something, so the puppeteers would be able to stand and operate Grover. Knowing and seeing all this, it truly amazed me that Grover seemed totally alive. It even felt to me at certain moments like Grover really was alive and he was just allowing these silly people to think they were operating him, but really he was having a good time with his new friend, Lena. Even at the time, my logical mind was fighting about this: he can't be alive, but he is alive, but he's just a puppet, but he's living and singing right here in front of me, but he's not real, but he is!"
