Hurricane Gustav has already swept across the Caribbean killing over 80 people in Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. Now the storm has swelled to a Category 4 storm and the US National Hurricane Centre says it could become a Category 5.

Hurricane Gustav is currently lashing Cuba and forecasters say it will cross the Gulf of Mexico and hit central Louisiana on Tuesday with the same force as Hurricane Katrina, exactly three years ago.

Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports.

Gustav reached hurricane strength Friday, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. The storm blasted Jamaica earlier in the day, and its is expected to take it to Grand Cayman soon, according to the National Hurricane Center.

At least 51 people died in southwestern Haiti and eight were killed in neighboring Dominican Republic as Gustav, then a tropical storm, passed through Wednesday, officials there said.

But fear and uncertainty about Gustav's position and strength by Monday sent emergency officials and politicians in the United States scrambling to prepare for a possible landfall of a major hurricane somewhere along the Gulf Coast.
As of 2 p.m. ET Friday, Gustav was 125 miles (200 kilometers) east-southeast of Grand Cayman and about 425 miles (685 kilometers) east-southeast of Cuba's western tip, the hurricane center said.

The storm was moving west-northwest at about 11 mph (19 km/h), the center said said. Forecasters expected it to turn toward the northwest later Friday and continue on that track over the weekend. On that path, "The center of Gustav will pass near or over the Cayman Islands later today, over the western portions of Cuba on Saturday, and into the southern Gulf of Mexico on Sunday," the center said.

This is one of the very first news broadcasts I recorded on video tape, back in July, 1978. This is local South Florida news station, WTVJ Channel 4, covering Tropical Storm Amelia, which developed off the Texas coast on July 30th. Reporter Al Sunshine interviews the late, great John Hope who, at that time, was a senior hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center. At the station, meteorlogist Don Carson gives anchorman Bob Mayer, and viewers, details on the current position of the storm, along with South Florida's weather conditions.

Hurricane Dolly lashes Texas-Mexico border
Hurricane Dolly was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane today after it made landfall on South Padre Island, Texas, the National Hurricane Center said. But Dolly's sustained winds were still about 95 miles an hour. The storm is expected to produce from 8 to 12 inches of rain, with up to 20 inches in isolated spots, and widespread flooding is likely.

This is a montage of satellite and radar loops from Hurricane Kate in November 1985. The beginning of the clip is footage I shot at the National Hurricane Center on November 18, 1985 as Hurricane Kate moved westward through the Bahamas towards landfall on the north coast of Cuba. The middle portion of the clip are segments of Tropical Weather Updates from The Weather Channel on November 19, 1985, as Kate moved along the north coast of Cuba... including several portions with the late, great John Hope. The last part of the clip is footage I shot at the National Weather Service office in Apalachicola, Florida on November 21, 1985, during the storm chase, as Kate was approaching its final landfall in the Florida panhandle.

Hurricane Ivan was a classic, long-lived Cape Verde hurricane that reached Category 5 strength three times during its lifespan. Ivan caused tremendous damage as it crossed Grenada, the Cayman Islands and made landfall near the Alabama/Florida border. Maximum sustained winds at landfall in the U.S. are estimated at 120mph with gusts to 140mph, Category Three intensity. At landfall, the storm's minimum central pressure was 946mb (27.94in). This video also includes some behind-the-scenes footage from the National Hurricane Center including clips of my good friends and hurricane forecasters, Lixion Avila, Jack Beven, Max Mayfield (the center's director at that time)... as well as another good friend, Monroe County ex-Civil Defense Director Billy Wagner. Also in the background is Florida Governor, Charlie Crist.

Hurricane Frances was a long-track Cape Verde hurricane that reached a peak intensity of 145mph, Category Four, north of Puerto Rico. Moderate wind shear began to affect the storm and it crossed the Southeast and Central Bahamas as a Category Three with winds of 115-130mph. Frances continued to weaken to a Category Two, with winds of 105mph, as it approached the Northwest Bahamas. Steering currents weakend on September 4th and Frances responded by turning to the west and slowing to a crawl. Over the following 48 hours, Frances made a very slow landfall over the Florida east coast, coming onshore near the south end of Hutchinson Island as a category Two, with peak winds of 105-110mph. Minimum central pressure at landfall in Florida was 960mb (28.35in). I was accompanied on this chase by storm chasers Jose Garcia and Karl Hoarau. The video also includes some behind-the-scenes footage from the National Hurricane Center, with several forecasters, including my good friends Eric Blake and Max Mayfield (the center's director at that time).

Here are some of the hurricane tracks for 2005, the warnings were published by the National Hurricane Center-NOAA
Various loops of Hurricane Andrew's landfall in Southeast Florida from the Miami and Tampa WSR-57 radars. On several of the long-range Miami loops, a large black wedge shape (indicating no reflectivity) appears on the very last frame...this occurred when the radome blew off the National Hurricane Center building during a 164mph gust, destroying the Miami radar. After Miami's radar failed (and Key West's radar had lost power), forecasters were still able to monitor the progress of Andrew's eyewall, which was just in range, on Tampa radar as the hurricane crossed the southern portion of the Florida peninsula. On the close-up loops of Andrew's eyewall, a distinct dual-hemispheric organization of the radar eye can be seen, with each half rotating cyclonically in tandem with the other, in a trochoidal looping pattern. Post-analysis indicated that one of these was the storm's wind-center, while the other was the pressure-center, which were displaced from each other by a distance of about 5 miles.

This is my Hurricane Andrew chase video. The footage was taken during Andrew's landfall on the Southeast Florida coast, at Coconut Grove, south of Miami. Though Andrew was extremely small, moving very quickly and made landfall about 15 miles to the south, my location was right at the edge of the hurricane's northern eyewall. Unfortunately the entire peak of the storm was at night, however, using a portable spotlight, I was able to capture footage throughout the entire event. Even with the challenging video conditions, Andrew's ferocity is clearly obvious in this footage. The roar of the wind is deafening, punctuated by breaking glass and other debris. Peak winds occur between 13 through 17 minutes into the video, and are sustained near 130mph with gusts to 150mph. The anemometer at the National Hurricane Center (about 2 miles west of my location) failed after recording a gust to 164mph. Based on post-analysis, Andrew is now estimated to have had sustained winds of 165mph with peak gusts near 200-215mph at landfall in South Florida, making it one of only three Category Five hurricanes ever to strike the United States.
