PANDIT KUMAR BOSE

Kumar Bose is the preeminent torchbearer for
the Benaras Tabla gharana having trained under the great maestro, Pandit
Kishen Maharaj. Born into a distinguished musical family, Kumar Bose became well
known in the seventies, when he started performing with Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Since then he has been a sought after accompanist of all the leading musicians of
our time, both instrumentalists and vocalists. True to the tradition of the Benaras gharana, he subtly balances
the warm tones of the bayan with the higher pitched crisp tones of the tabla.

"Like husband and wife, the tabla player and the main artist have to compromise.
The tabla player has to think what the main artist is doing and where the musical piece
is going. In a way the tabla player has to stay slightly subdued than the main artist
because you are there to support him. The main artist is driving the concert and
your job is to let him lead and follow his direction. You may only overtake if he allows you to play something or the
situation demands it".

Kumar Bose has collaboratedin many experiments - with Zubin Mehta in his Philharmonic orchestra. Healso performed in several symphony orchestras conducted by Pandit. Ravi Shankar, Yehudi Menhuin, Arnovich. He has performed with many jazz and rock ensembles too. He worked with Mrinal Sen for one of his films, Genesis, alongside compositions by Pandit Ravi Shankar.

DARBAR SOUTH ASIAN MUSIC FESTIVAL

Three days - 25 hours of music - Morning, afternoon and evening concerts - Dozens of artists - 20 musical traditions. Within the space of two short years, Darbar has put in place an extraordinary Festival of Indian Classical Music in Leicester.

The 2008 Festival (April 4th to 6th) includes established artists like the multi-talented Pandit Nayan Ghosh on Tabla and Sitar, Surbahar maestro Irshad Khan and Uday Bhawalkar representing the ancient tradition of Dhrupad.
